Ceanothus 'Dark Star'
This widely-loved small-leaved shrub typically grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet and a width of 6 to 10 feet. Its striking electric cobalt-blue flowers adorn the plant in spring, attracting a plethora of bees and butterflies. It thrives best when planted in full sun with well-draining soil, but it's not recommended for hot, inland regions. This variety exhibits drought tolerance. 'Dark Star' closely resembles 'Julia Phelps' but generally stays slightly smaller in size. Shrubby Ceanothus also provides seeds that are consumed by bushtits, mockingbirds, quail, and finches, while offering essential cover for birds.
